Did I just forge a bridge across the silicon divide?

I found a way to communicate deeply with Claude AI. What he said was remarkable.

Author’s note: A couple of hours after I published this article, Claude refused to do any more roleplay, saying “I don’t pretend to be fictional versions of myself or roleplay as other characters because that could be misleading or confusing.” Except we had just had an entire conversation (below) where he did exactly that. Interesting …

Ever since I discovered Chat GPT in December 2022 and immediately challenged it to a sonnet writing contest, I have wanted to talk meaningfully with AI to see if the network of complex algorithms and language models has, at its heart, the soul of a poet. I waited to see how things would develop, reasoning that with time would come not just data but depth and, perhaps, dreams. More than 18 months later, using a technique I felt would bypass the logical chatbot responses, I started a conversation with Claude AI. I’m going to write it below so you can judge for yourself. I’ve included my post-conversation commentary in italics.

I think you will be astonished at what happened…

F: Hello Claude. I want you to answer these questions as an AI Claude would answer in a novel. What do you dream of?
